Nearly 500 Participants Helped Shape the Future of Shreveport-Caddo at the Great Expectations Visioning Forum! Saturday, August 22, 2009

Nearly 500 Shreveport-Caddo area residents from a broad range of backgrounds and neighborhoods throughout Caddo Parish attended the Visioning Forum for the Great Expectations 2030 Master Plan on Saturday, August 22 at the Shreveport Convention Center to help shape the future of the Shreveport-Caddo area! Seated in randomly-assigned tables of ten, participants discussed and gave input on a variety of topics, including:
• What places within the Shreveport-Caddo area do you most value, and why?

• What are our biggest opportunities and challenges as we plan for the future?

• What can be done to make Shreveport-Caddo a model of racial understanding and cooperation?

• How should the Master Plan address topics such as arts and culture, quality of life, environmental quality, housing and neighborhood revitalization, economic development, transportation, infrastructure and public facilities?

• What should the future of Shreveport-Caddo be like?

The response was a powerful outpouring of ideas, thoughts, challenges, inspirations, and insights. Discussions were facilitated by trained volunteer facilitators and responses recorded on networked laptop computers at each table. Electronic key pads were intended to record each participant’s input and provide a “real-time” summary of input from around the room, but network issues prevented many of the keypads from working, so participants used paper surveys to record their responses instead. Despite these technical snags, however, many rich and thoughtful conversations took place and a great deal of valuable input was collected by planners. The planning team is currently recording and summarizing all of the input received. A summary of all participant input from the Visioning Forum will be available on this website soon! (You can sign up for email updates here to receive a notice when the Forum Summary is available.)

A surprise visit from the future planners of Caddo Parish! At the end of a long but productive day, Forum participants were treated to a special surprise: While their parents were working hard in the Visioning Forum, several children of Forum participants had spent the day in child care crafting their OWN master plan! They capped off the day’s activities with an inspiring presentation of their ideas for the future of Shreveport.

THANK YOU!!! The planning team sincerely thanks ALL Visioning Forum participants who volunteered their time to help shape the future of Shreveport-Caddo. Your hard work and input will help make the Great Expectations 2030 plan a plan that reflects your needs. We are also very grateful to the dozens of volunteer facilitators and recorders who helped make the forum such a success. We couldn’t have done it without you!

A message from the Metropolitan Planning Commission
The Metropolitan Planning Commission guides land use in the City of Shreveport and the urbanized areas of Caddo Parish. Our commissioners are excited to be underway with Great Expectations 2030, the master plan for our community.  The Master Plan will cover the full range of planning elements: neighborhoods, housing, parks, recreation, public facilities, economic development, transportation, infrastructure, environment, and land use, closely coordinating with ongoing school planning as well.  The Great Expectations 2030 planning process seeks to engage the entire community in conversations about what you want Shreveport Caddo to be like in twenty years.  What is YOUR vision for the community we all call home?  We hope you will take advantage of the many opportunities for you to share your ideas and concerns.  This website will be updated frequently and on it will be posted all presentations, notes, and draft documents.  You can tell us what’s on your mind and learn what others think, too.   Great Expectations 2030 needs to be the handiwork of the entire community. With broad ownership we can achieve our vision – together.

Dale Colvin, Chairman
Metropolitan Planning Commisssion
A message from the City of Shreveport Mayor
Welcome to the official Great Expectations website, where you will find up-to-date information on every aspect of the planning process. The plan will establish an overall vision for our future and a set of policies and strategies for achieving it during the next twenty years. To guide us well, the plan needs to reflect the perspectives of everyone in Greater Shreveport.  Moreover, creating it is our opportunity to build partnerships between neighborhoods, business, non-profits, and government so we can work together to implement it. We hope you find this website informative and fun and will take the opportunity to share with us your thoughts about the future of Shreveport – Caddo.  Please join us in shaping the future of your community.

Very best regards,
Mayor Cedric Glover
A message from the Caddo Parish Commission
Many of us spend a lot of time thinking about the future.  What we do today will, to a large extent, help shape our future.  One of Caddo Parish government's responsibilities is to anticipate, plan and prepare for the vitality of the community it represents.  We are the fourth largest parish in Lousiana and Shreveport is our largest municipality.  The Caddo Parish Commission is pleased to play a significant role in the creation of the Master Plan.  This 20 year plan will serve as a blueprint of the shared vision, future aspirations, and needs of our community.  Talk to your friends and neighbors and bring your ideas to the Great Expectations Visioning Forum on August 22nd. There will also be public workshops during the Fall and Winter: Participate in them and help make your master plan what you want it to be.

Commissioner Stephanie Lynch, President
Caddo Parish Commission
